The core curriculum is delivered by a D.A.R.E. officer to fifth & seventh grade students and includes one lesson per week for ten consecutive weeks. The D.A.R.E. program requires that a certified teacher be present and help supplement classroom activities. A wide range of teaching techniques are used including questions and answers, group discussion, role playing and workbook exercises:
- providing accurate information about alcohol and drugs.
- teaching students decision making skills.
- showing them how to resist peer pressure.
- giving them ideas for alternatives to drug use, violence and drugs.
Since the inception of D.A.R.E. in Saint John, the program has expanded to the outlying areas from Grand Bay-Westfield to Coles Island. This includes R.C.M.P. and Rothesay Regional Police.
There are approximately 2,300 students, 10 and 11 years old, participating in the program each year. Since 1998, there have been over 6,000 students who completed the D.A.R.E. program in the Fundy region.
The D.A.R.E. program is being funded by corporations and service groups in the Fundy region.

- First graduation January, 1999 ― 513 students graduated.
Project Objectives
- Teaching the children of Saint John how and why they should stay away from drugs.
- It will fill the need to decrease the amount of drugs in the city.

The Saint John Police Force, working in partnership with the Community, is committed to preserving and enhancing the quality of life in the City of Saint John by making it a safer place in which to live, work and play.
The Saint John Police Force has approximately 160 members.
Our goal is to train more officers so the program can be given to the youth of Saint John from Kindergarden through grade 12.
